Fire pump replacement is the answer when a sprinkler pump set can no longer make its duty under flow, keeps failing after repair, or has reached the end of its life. The pump and the tank are one water supply, and the system was designed around both, so the new set is proved the way the old one should have been: run under flow against its duty, with automatic start, changeover and alarms tested. Sentry Sprinkler Protection does this work across England from its base in Kettering, ISO 9001 certified.

When a fire pump needs replacing

  • It starts on the weekly test but cannot make its duty when the annual flow test is run.
  • The same faults come back after every repair.
  • The system has been extended, and the design check shows the existing pump cannot supply it.

A jockey pump that runs constantly is not a reason to replace anything. It is usually chasing a leak, and a new jockey pump on a leaking system goes the same way.

Repair is checked first

A set that will not start is often the batteries, the fuel, the charger or the controller rather than the pump, and those are cheaper to put right. We test before we quote, and only price a replacement when the set itself cannot do the job. See fire pump repair for that side of it.

Keeping the building protected

A sprinkler system without its pump is not protecting the building as designed, so the changeover is planned: what will be out of service, for how long, and who needs telling, your insurer included.

Where there is a duty and standby pair, one set can usually stay in service while the other is changed.

A replacement fire pump, proved before we leave

  • The new set run under flow, its flow and pressure checked against the duty.
  • Automatic start proved, including changeover from a failed duty pump.
  • Pump running and pump failed alarms proved to wherever they report.
  • On a diesel set, the batteries, fuel and charger checked.
  • The record updated for your insurer.

Questions about fire pump replacement

Is a new fire pump always the same size as the old one?

Not automatically. The duty comes from the system design, and if the system has been extended or the hazard has changed since, the old pump may not be the right answer either. We check the duty against the design before we specify the replacement.

How long does a fire pump replacement take?

It depends on the set and on how the pump house is laid out, so you get a programme with the quote. The time the system is out of service is planned in advance and kept as short as the work allows.

Is the pump controller replaced with the pump?

Only if it needs to be. A controller that keeps failing is often the reason a pump seems to have failed, so it is tested on its own before anything is priced.
