Sprinkler system extension work covers new floors, mezzanines, building extensions, fit-outs and racking the existing system was never designed for. The pipework is the easy part. What decides whether an extension works is the design check behind it: the hazard classification of what is now stored, and whether the water supply can still deliver what the bigger system needs. Sentry Sprinkler Protection does this work across England from its base in Kettering, ISO 9001 certified.

When a sprinkler system needs extending or altering

  • A mezzanine, a new floor or an extension to the building.
  • Racking raised or added, or the goods stored have changed.
  • A fit-out that moves walls, ceilings or rooms.
  • A change of use.

The design check comes first

Under BS EN 12845 the design density follows what is stored and how high, not the floor area. Raise the racking or change the goods and the hazard class can move without a pipe being touched.

We check the classification and the water supply before pricing. Finding out late that the supply will not cope means a tank and pump set arriving as a variation.

Working in a building that stays open

Extensions usually happen in buildings that are occupied and protected. Only the zone being altered is isolated, for the shortest time the work allows, and the rest of the building keeps its protection. The isolation is agreed with you in writing and your insurer is told.

The record has to follow the system

An extension is not finished until the drawings, calculations and certificate describe the system as it now is. An altered system whose paperwork still shows the old layout is the gap a fire risk assessor or an insurer finds first.

Questions about sprinkler system extension

Can you alter or extend a sprinkler system another contractor installed?

Yes. Extensions and alterations to systems already installed are a large part of what we do. We need the existing drawings and records if they exist; if they do not, the survey establishes what is there first.

Will the whole building lose its protection during the work?

No. Only the zone being altered is isolated, for as short a time as the work takes, and the rest of the building stays protected.

What does the survey for an extension cover?

The existing system, the new layout and the water supply. Then we put a fixed price in writing. There is no survey fee and no obligation.
